HOUSTON, TX — In a joyous celebration that blended culture, community spirit, and a powerful commitment to education, Southwest Farmers Market (SWFM) hosted its inaugural 2025 Scholarship Award Lunch on August 2nd, 2025, at The Norris Conference Center in Houston. With the theme “Nurturing Minds, Building Futures,” the event honored ten exceptional young African students with $5,000 scholarships each, totaling $50,000 in educational funding.

From the red carpet to the final musical notes, the event overflowed with pride, color, and purpose. Cultural attire was worn with elegance and a refreshing sense of unity filled the room as guests enjoyed light cocktails, laughter, and spirited conversation before the main program began.

Investing in Future Generations

In his speech, SWFM CEO Philip Oshotse remarked, “Today, we begin a new chapter dedicated to empowering the young ones in our community. Our future is truly bright in America.” He emphasized that the scholarship program was not merely a financial aid initiative but a celebration of leadership, academic achievement, and resilience.

The keynote speech by guest speaker Kay Elegbede, titled “Making an Impact in the World as an African Child,” set the tone for the day. Elegbede encouraged students to embrace their identities, pursue excellence, and become agents of transformation not only in their communities but globally.

The SWFM Scholarship Program is open to African students across the United States and seeks to recognize not only academic excellence but also extracurricular involvement, community leadership, and perseverance in the face of adversity.
