ABUJA, NIGERIA — Nigeria’s Super Falcons have once again etched their names in history, not only with a stunning championship victory but through the overwhelming recognition and gratitude shown by the Nigerian government and its people.

After a dramatic 3–2 comeback win against Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the team returned home to national celebrations and unprecedented rewards. The final, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, saw the Falcons rally from two goals down to claim their tenth WAFCON title—extending their record as the most successful women’s football team in African history.

To honor their achievement, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted the team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he announced a series of landmark rewards and public commendations.

National Rewards and Recognition

President Tinubu conferred the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 35 team members —including 24 players and 11 technical staff. In addition to the national awards, the President announced:

  • A $100,000 cash gift to each player
  • A $50,000 cash gift to each member of the coaching and support staff
  • Three-bedroom apartments in Abuja for all team members, provided under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme

The recognition was described as the most significant reward package ever given to a Nigerian women’s sports team.

“You have made Nigeria proud,” President Tinubu said in his address. “You have inspired millions across our nation, especially young girls who can now see that excellence and recognition are within reach. You did not only win a trophy; you won the hearts of an entire nation.”

A Defining Tournament Performance

The Falcons’ tournament campaign, themed “Mission X,” was marked by both highs and lows. Despite early challenges in the group stage, the team showed its trademark resilience in the knockout rounds. In the final, they faced a strong Moroccan side backed by a home crowd, falling behind 2–0 before mounting a determined second-half comeback that led to a 3–2 victory.

The win sealed their 10th continental championship, further establishing Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament, spoke on behalf of the team, expressing gratitude to the President, the nation, and the fans.

“This victory is not just ours. It belongs to every Nigerian, to every young girl who dreams of more, and to everyone who believes that hard work will be rewarded. We are deeply honored and grateful,” Ajibade said.

Support From Across the Nation

During the reception, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum also announced a collective reward of ₦10 million for each player and staff member, further underscoring the team’s status as national heroes.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also commended the team, describing them as “bold, brilliant, and beautiful examples of what women can achieve when given the opportunity and support.”

Government officials and sports leaders praised the players not only for their athletic ability but for the way they carried themselves on and off the field—demonstrating leadership, unity, and pride in representing the nation.

A New Era for Women’s Sports in Nigeria

The ceremony and rewards signify a potential turning point in how women’s sports are valued and supported in Nigeria. Advocates for female athletes have long called for equal recognition and resources, and this year’s response from the federal and state governments may mark the beginning of a more inclusive sports culture.

“This is a historic moment,” said head coach Justine Madugu. “We’ve been building something special for years, and to see our work recognized at the highest level means everything. This will inspire the next generation to believe in themselves.”

Looking Ahead

As the Super Falcons continue to prepare for future international competitions, including the next FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers, their recent triumph has sparked renewed interest in the women’s game nationwide. The team’s legacy is growing—and so is their influence beyond the pitch.

For millions of young Nigerians, the message is clear: with discipline, faith, and opportunity, greatness is possible.
